The large menu card at Reuben's, the famous New York restaurant,
includes an impressive sandwich section. Most of the specialties were
thought up by visiting celebrities.
Jack Benny and Mary Livingston always want Reuben's open-face
sandwich made of turkey, smoked beef tongue, Swiss cheese on rye
bread with coleslaw and Russian dressing. Try this on hungry men
guests and you'll understand why the Jack Bennys like it too.
Mary Martin's favorite: Virginia ham, Swiss cheese, sliced dill pickle
on rye bread.
Ed Sullivan's sandwich: Chopped chicken livers and corned beef on
Ethel Merman's favorite at Reuben's: Sliced turkey, sliced tomato,
hard-cooked egg, Russian dressing on whole wheat bread
Ginger Rogers Special:
Imported caviar and cream cheese on rye or
Judy Garland's sandwich: Nova Scotia Salmon and Swiss cheese on rye
Sliced turkey with cranberry sauce on French toast is another good
sandwich on this menu. This is the way my sons like to dispose of the
holiday bird, I find. Good served with maple syrup for teen parties.
My own favorite there, though they haven't immortalized it, is crusty
rye bread, sliced tongue, Swiss cheese and coleslaw.
