3/4 cp shortening
2 cps light brown sugar
1 cp buttermilk
4 cps cake flour
7/8 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp vanilla
1 1/2 cps finely ground walnut meats
1/4 tsp salt
1 - Cream the shortening with the sugar; add the buttermilk and vanilla and beat in the flour mixed with the soda, salt, and nuts.
2 - Cover and chill for 1 hour; then roll, a small portion at a time, thin, on a lightly floured board.
3 - Cut in diamonds or squares; and place in an oiled pan.
4 - Sprinkle with sugar; decorate each cake with a whole nut meat; and bake in a moderate oven, 350 degrees F. about 12 minutes.
5 - If necessary, add more flour just before rolling.
