French Petticoat Cookies
2 cps butter
4 level cps flour
2 tbsp milk
grated rind of 1 lemon
1 cp sugar
1 heaping tsp baking powder
1 - Cream butter and sugar then add flour and baking powder that have been sifted
aeveral times, then milk and the grated lemon rind, then roll.
2 - Cut into triangles and bake in quick oven, and sprinkle with powdered sugar when baked
When Mary Stuart left France to claim her Scottish Throne, her attendants brought back with them
the recipes for these little cookies. The French called them "petite gateaux tailes", the Scotch
translate this as "petticoattails".
