2 qts ripe gooseberries
1 1/2 lbs (4 1/8 cps packed) brown sugar
1 cp cider vinegar
1/2 tsp powdered cinnamon
1/2 tsp powdered cloves
1/2 tsp grated nutmeg
1 - Pick over berries and drain
2 - Combine sugar, vinegar and spices in agate or enamel kettle; bring to boiling; add berries a few at a time.
3 - Cook slowly until fruit is tender, about 40 minutes.
4 - Pour into hot sterile glass jars.
Makes about 5 pints.
